Maa Mundeshwari Temple bhagwanpur is an ancient temple dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Shakti and is considered one of the oldest Hindu temples in India. It is also considered as the oldest functional Hindu temple of India.
ASI shows dating of the mundeshwari temple to 108 AD. The temple, a protected monument under Archaeological Survey of india Since 1915.
ऐतिहासिक दृष्टि से जिस मंदिर को दुनिया का सबसे पुराना मंदिर माना जाता है, वह बिहार के कैमूर जिले में स्थित मुंडेश्वरी मंदिर है। कहा जाता है कि इस मंदिर में पिछले 1900 सालों से लगातार पूजा हो रही है।कैमूर जिले के भगवानपुर क्षेत्र में पवरा पहाड़ी पर 608 फीट की ऊँचाई पर स्थित इस मंदिर से प्राप्त शिलालेख के अनुसार उदय सेन के शासन काल में इसका निर्माण हुआ। इस मंदिर का शिल्प व प्रतिमाएं उत्तर गुप्तकालीन समय की हैं। इस मंदिर में पंचमुखी शिवलिंग स्थापित है, जो दुर्लभ है। मां मुंडेश्वरी के रूप में दुर्गा का वैष्णवी रूप यहां प्रतिस्थापित है। मुंडेश्वरी की प्रतिमा वाराही देवी की प्रतिमा है, क्योंकि इनका वाहन महिष है। यह मंदिर अष्टकोणीय है। दक्षिण की ओर मुख्य द्वार है।

मुंडेश्वरी मंदिर की विशेषता यह है कि यहां पशु बलि की सात्विक परंपरा है। यहां बलि में बकरा चढ़ाया जाता है, लेकिन उसका जीवन नहीं लिया जाता। एक और अनोखी बात यह है कि यहां पहाड़ी के मलबे के अंदर गणेश और शिव सहित अनेक देवी–देवताओं की मूर्तियाँ दब गईं। खुदाई के दौरान ये मिलती रही हैं। यहाँ खुदाई के क्रम में मंदिरों के समूह भी मिले हैं। वर्ष 1968 में पुरातत्व विभाग ने यहां से मिलीं 97 दुर्लभ प्रतिमाओं को सुरक्षा की दृष्टि से ‘पटना संग्रहालय‘ में रखवा दिया। तीन प्रतिमाएं ‘कोलकाता संग्रहालय‘ में हैं।

The Maa Mundeshwari Temple Bhabhua Kaimur Bihar temple, built of stone, is on an octagonal plan which is rare. It is the earliest specimen of the Nagara style of temple architecture in Bihar. There are doors or windows on four sides and small niches for the reception of statues in the remaining four walls. The temple shikhara or tower has been destroy. However, a roof has been built, as part of renovation work. The interior walls have niches and bold mouldings which are carve with vase and foliage designs. At the entrance to the temple, the door jambs are see with carved images of Dvarapalas, Ganga, Yamuna and many other murtis.
The main deities in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple are of the Devi Mundeshwari and Chaturmukh (four faced) Shiva linga. The temple also has murtis of other popular gods such as Ganesha, Surya and Vishnu. A substantial part of this stone structure has been damage, and many stone fragments are see strew around the temple. However, under the jurisdiction of ASI, it has been the subject of archaeological study for quite some time.

ग्रैंडकॉर्ड रेल लाइन या ग्रांड ट्रंक मार्ग (एनएच-2) से कैमूर ज़िले के मोहनियाँ (भभुआ रोड) अथवा कुदरा स्टेशन तक पहुंचें। यहां से मुंडेश्वरी धाम तक सड़क जाती है। मंदिर के अंदर पहुंचने के लिए पहाड़ को काटकर सीढियाँ और रेलिंग युक्त सड़क है। सड़क मार्ग से कार, जीप या बाइक से पहाड़ के ऊपर मंदिर में पहुंचा जा सकता है। हवाई यात्रा के लिए वाराणसी, गया और पटना में से किसी एक शहर को चुना जा सकता है।
